Accident Assessment Answer: The diver chose to be evaluated by a doctor. Doctors develop a list of differential diagnoses, which means a list of potential causes. This doctor suspected a mask squeeze, increased pressure in the eyes due to no medication and also a reaction to an unknown irritant. The hospital had the means to measure her intraocular (within the eye) pressures and found them to be greatly elevated. This explained the most likely cause for her symptoms. The doctor provided her with the same medication she would normally take and recommended she refrain from further diving until the pressures normalized. When planning a trip, it is essential to make sure you bring all of your prescription medications with you. If you should forget, it is in your best interest to visit with a local doctor who should be able to assist. As a DAN Member, you can also contact DAN to use your TravelAssist benefit when you are traveling more than 50 miles from home, which includes prescription assistance.
