According to reports in Spain, Barcelona are considering a surprise January bid for Dimitar Berbatov, Sergio Aguero or Didier Drogba, as cover for the injured Lionel Messi. Messi could miss up to eight weeks after tearing his hamstring against Real Betis last Sunday. Berbatov’s contract with Fulham runs out at the end of the season, and word is Barcelona believe they can sign him for next to nothing to provide short-term cover. The Bulgarian forward has two goals and one assist in 11 appearances this season. Calling this a shock development would be an understatement, with the 32-year-old former Manchester United forward’s languid style of play quite at odds with Barca’s ‘tiki-taka’ football. However, Gerardo Martino is said to favour a move for Berbatov, believing his expert link-up play will benefit Neymar and Sanchez. According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Berbatov is one of several experienced centre-forwards on Martino’s shortlist, along with Manchester Citys Sergio Aguero, Lazio’s Miroslav Klose, Borussia Dortmunds Robert Lewandowski and Galatasarays Didier Drogba. “Berbatov has emerged as a surprise target for Spanish giants Barcelona with manager Gerardo Martino intrigued by the technique and experience of the former Manchester United and Tottenham striker,” the Daily Express reports. “Reports in Spain suggest that Barca are contemplating adding short-term cover for the injured Lionel Messi and Berbatov’s name is on the list.”
