University of Szeged The University was founded in 1581. He was the first to isolate vitamin C, extracted from paprika. The English Language Program for foreign students was established in 1985. University Of Pecs Medical School The historic city of Pecs is proud to house the countrys oldest University, which was founded in 1367 by King Louis the Great. The University of Pecs is a state University. The medical school is listed in the WHOs directory of Medical Schools and is accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board. The International Program was started in 1984. Students from 39 countries are educated in the University. In the academic year 2010/11 165 general medicine, 54 dentistry and 28 pharmacy students were admitted to the medical school. Several of its departments (Heart Center, Department of Nephrology, Diagnostic Center, and Department of Traumatology etc.) are among the best equipped clinical facilities in Hungary. Szent Istvan University Faculty of Veterinary Science - one of the oldest veterinary schools in the world. This European-standard faculty still operates on small scale and it enrolls only a limited number of students each year keeping a familiar atmosphere in the historical campus located in the middle of Budapest. In fact, the Chair of Animal Healing at the Faculty of Medicine was established in 1787 shortly after the foundation of the first veterinary school in the world (in Lyon in 1762). As an independent institution the school earned an international reputation in the first half of the 20th century. In the 1990s a Field Station and a Large Animals Clinic was built outside Budapest providing a bigger supply of horses and cattle for the students in the clinical years. In 2000 the veterinary school became an integrated part of the Szent Istvan University. Since the foundation of the international programs in 1989 around 2000 international students were enrolled. The conclusion of the 1995 accreditation report by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education reported that the University of Veterinary Science can claim a proud position among its European counterparts. Salient Features: • Szent Istvan University (SZIU) is one of the five most famous universities in Hungary. Their exchange student program is very organized and systemic. University of Debrecen The history of higher education in Debrecen goes back to the 16th century. The city established the Calvinist College of Debrecen in 1538. In the 18th century the schools of Law and Theology were founded and although no separate School of Medicine existed, physicians were also trained in the College. Todays University Medical School is rooted in this spiritual heritage. The Medical School of the University of Debrecen is Central Europes first campus medical school. It was in the year of the millennium (1896) of Hungarys foundation when the establishment of a modern University was decided upon in Debrecen. The University was officially inaugurated on October 23, 1918 and at that time consisted of four faculties: Arts, Science, Theology and Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine became an independent University Medical School under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in 1951. The Medical School has 22 departments of basic sciences and 25 clinical departments specializing in various fields.
