Acid Attack Hurted Mudasir Police in Kashmir remain ‘clueless’ about the youths who squirted acid on a young college-going girl despite quizzing many acid-sellers in the summer capital on Srinagar. Investigations also point out that the attackers may have fled Kashmir. The 21-year-old law student was attacked by car-borne youth outside her college in sub-urban Nowshera when she was on her way to attend a special lecture from a prominent jurist from the region. Police have constituted a special team to nab the culprits involved in acid attack but so far nothing substantial has come out of the investigation, a top police officer told Kashmir Dispatch. He said the acid-attack survivor did not identify the attackers. “We have spoken to the girl but she doesn’t identify the youth. We remain clueless,” he said. A close relative of the survivor confirmed to Kashmir Dispatch that the girl didn’t know her attackers. “I spoke to her twice but she said she doesn’t know the youth,” the relative said and added: “she would not hide from her family if there was any history. Police have however questioned few acid-sellers from the city. But, Station House Officer Soura, Mushtaq Ahmed said they have got some important leads and hopefully culprits will be arrested soon. “We received a phone call from Srinagar Airport while the caller informed us that a white maruti ‘MANSA’ sticker at rear side is parked there. We sent our team there but could not locate the car,” he said. Ahmed added that the culprits might have gone to airport to leave the Valley. “We have sent a team to airport on Friday to collect the CCTV footage,” he said. “Police are on toes to nab the culprits. We have left no stone unturned to get these culprits arrested and I assure people that they would be nabbed soon,” he said. Meanwhile, another police officer said that scores of acid sellers were called to police station for questioning. “We are collecting all the details about the persons who procured acid from these sellers in recent past,” he said. The unidentified attackers believed to be three in number, sprinkled acid on her face from a white Maruti 800, with ‘MANSA’ sticker pasted on its rear windscreen. The young woman suffered horrific injuries after having corrosive liquid thrown in her face. Her friends had told Kashmir Dispatch that as the girl was nearing her college in Tawheedabad some persons in a car halted in front of her and suddenly squirted the acid from a bottle. She was shifted to SK Institute of Medical Sciences in Soura. Doctors at the hospital said they shifted her to JVC medical college and hospital as she had injuries in eyes. A doctor at the JVC in Bemina said: She has a serious injury in one of her eyes and has acid-burns on both her hands and face. Dr Jasiya who is a resident doctor at the Ophthalmology department in the super-specialty hospital in Soura said the acid-attack survivor has received sever injuries to her left eye. “The blood vessels of her eyes have been damaged, but we are hopeful that she will regain her sight,” she told Kashmir Dispatch. Eyewitnesses had said she ran screaming across the road as the liquid burned into her skin and hair following the morning attack. Local residents had run from their homes to pour water over the victim’s head and body in a desperate bid to wash away the substance. “She was calling out for her mother and saying, ‘my face is burning’ as we splashed water on her face,” a resident said.
