A US-based organization called the Japan Center for International Exchange recently issued a report noting that Americans, despite the fact that Japan is a rich nation in and of itself, have given about $730 million to assist Japan in rebuilding and recovery – an amount that makes this “the largest philanthropic response ever in American history for an overseas disaster in another developed country” Yet, since that tragedy an environmental disaster affecting our oceans has been unfolding...with little-to-no response from Japan. In fact, if you listen to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Tokyo Electric Power, they completely downplay the risks to the rest of the world and to Japans own citizens. Reports vary widely, but According to the Physicians for Social Responsibility and The Environmental Health Policy Institute (psr.org) “...the Fukushima disaster produced the largest discharge of radioactive material into the ocean in history.[vi] Fifteen months after 733,000 curies of radioactive cesium were pumped into the Pacific, 56 percent of all fish catches off Japan were found to be contaminated with it.[vii] Fishing continues to be banned off the coast of Fukushima, where 40 percent of bottom dwelling fish (sole, halibut, cod) were recently found to have radioactive cesium levels higher than current Japanese regulatory limits” Many Japanese citizens in and around Fukushima claim their Prime Minister is involved in a massive cover-up. When it comes to the protected Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, Japan is no more responsible. According to a report from CTVNews (ctvnews.ca) on September 18th 2014 at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) Conference in Slovenia, the Commission “voted against Japans highly criticized plans to resume whaling in the Antarctic next year, but Japan vowed to go ahead anyway”. The resolution, adopted by a 35-20 vote, said Japan should abide by the International Court of Justices ruling that its whaling program is illegal…Immediately following the vote Japan arrogantly announced it will launch a new research program that will resume hunting in the Antarctic in 2015. Furthermore, small groups of fisherman in Japan claim ownership of the highly intelligent, sentient, cetaceans that swim off the coast of Taiji, also known as The Cove. They round them up each year from October through March, traumatize them and brutally kill these beautiful creatures in a horrific way. When asked to address the situation in Taiji, Prime Minister Abe defends the brutality as an honorable tradition and insists it shall continue. All of this greed and taking by Japan, and yet when other countries need help, Japan is nowhere to be found. According to the Economist, the government of Japan does far less than other rich countries to help others in need ( economist/node/2656985 ). Japans trade and migration policies are notoriously unhelpful towards poor countries.” And when it comes to their citizens, “Japans private citizens are not very generous: government aid aside, they give less than a cent each to poor countries. Only citizens in the southern European trio of Greece, Italy and Portugal are more miserly. If it makes you wonder why one would bother contributing goodwill and participating in commerce with a country that continually destroys the worlds resources and then flips the middle finger to the rest of the world - it should. Dont buy anything made in Japan until Japan reconsiders their whaling policy, stops their dolphin hunts and starts acting like evolved human beings.
