Activist Ihor Lutsenko: We have to understand that this is not a conflict between the supporters of Yanukovych and his opponents. It is much deeper. This is the protest against a system of police thugs, with epaulets or without. For twenty two years, this system of prosecutors, judges and police thugs was in charge of the country. This is the system where cadres circulate in a closed space and follow the same trajectory, and where the worldview is unified. When the first Molotov cocktails were thrown on Hrushevskoho street, the police thugs felt anxious. It was a sign, a very unpleasant sign for them: they were not feared anymore. They, the ruthless Berkut, were not feared anymore! The bandits in epaulettes instinctively felt, for the first time, that the world of their power started to shatter. And Yanukovych is almost irrelevant here. The conflict between the citizens and Yanukovych is but one layer of the conflict between the citizens and police thugs. A small part of a large battle. Hence everything that happened on Hrushevshoho was met with a fierce reaction. The volunteers immediately emerged who, with tacit consent with their commanders, had plenty of their own initiative to threaten the protesting crowds, destroy their revolutionary spirit with the waves of fear. They started doing the things they were always doing, but the things that ordinary people could not see in the swirl of everyday life, because these actions were so ruthless and unnatural. They started abducting and torturing people, only to pass them further on into the hands of the familiar ‘justice’ machine. They expected people to feel fear. They honestly consider the right to ruthlessness, the right to violence as their natural and inalienable right. Ask any judge, and they will explain to you that the society is not possible without a ruthless and wilful police. Now we are going through the all-Ukrainian Vradiyivka, and they understand it very well. They are ready to move openly, point blank, to supress the protest. They are quite independent from Yanukovych, they have their own interests. The worst thing today is that none of the political leaders is a convincing embodiment of the ideals of the protesting masses. One would be hard pressed to find among the three of them, or even among the second tier, a real ‘anti-policeman’, the one who would possess a credible plan of reforms for the judicial and the police system, and unrelenting energy to realize it. There is no political conflict. There are only police thugs and bandits against the people.
