Adhering to ethical practice is a behavior that patients count on when dealing with medical providers. However, when ethics is superseded by marketing, quotas, coercion and false statements, patients can be enticed to sign up for brain surgery with the hope of a new life. If a claim it too good to be true, then it probably is too good to be true. The problem for patients in knowing when the message is an exaggeration of the truth. This blog post explores concerning trends brought to our attention by savvy patients that were put off by a zealous sales pitch that everyone with Parkinsons should sign up for DBS. DBS is not for everyone and the right time for one person is not the right time for every person! DBS should be pursued in a thoughtful and highly ethical manner to protect the rights and dignity of our patients.
