Adopting Animals with Special Needs Most people who want to adopt a pet for themselves, or family, think of one thing: Adopt a pet that is very young instead of a pet that is older or with special needs. Kittens and puppies are, without a doubt, adorable. They make us fall in love with them at first sight and we think only of what a great addition it will make to our families and homes. They also are a great learning experience for our children who will learn how to care for a pet. Before making the decision to adopt a kitten or puppy though, consider adopting a pet with special needs. Every pet may be different and have his/her own requirements, but an animal with special needs can also bring unique feelings and lessons to learn. Consider: • Disabled pets do not know they are disabled. • Disabled pets are loyal and faithful. • Disabled pets fulfill something inside you that you did not know was missing or needed. • Disabled pets are independent. • Disabled pets become one of your best friends. • Disabled pets teach us to love life, whatever the situation. • Disabled pets are smart, quick learning, and undefeated. When making the decision to adopt a pet with special needs, you really should think about all of the circumstances surrounding the animal’s requirements. Consider: • What are the additional financial costs (if any)? • Can I accommodate the animal? • How will the animal fit in with the rest of your family or household? • Many animals that are rescued have been neglected or abused, and they have emotional scarring that requires special attention. • The worst thing that can happen is you find the fit is wrong, forcing you to surrender the animal you’ve just adopted. There are many good reasons to adopt an animal with special needs, making them a very good consideration when adding a new family member.
