Advise from my Global Coach: Mistakes Happen Good day William If you fail to take action because you are afraid of making a mistake, you will find yourself with little recompense. Making a mistake should serve as a lesson which will help you to improve and grow. The rewards you can reap far outweigh the uncertainty associated with the risk of making a mistake. Mistakes happen, but the key is to turn a mistake into a learning experience. Mistakes can add significant value if we choose to acknowledge them and make use of the information they provide. Conversely, the opposite is true if we substitute guilt, denial, or panic for learning from our mistakes. Simply said, a mistake is an unexpected opportunity to discover that something needs to change in some way. When ~ not if ~ mistakes happen, the proper reaction is to acknowledge the problem, analyze potential causes, and develop potential solutions. Often, employees are terrified of the consequences of making mistakes. This is our fault, as leaders. If we show that we are human, demonstrating our own willingness to make mistakes and then actively learn from those mistakes, we are teaching our employees that it is okay to make mistakes as long as we learn from them. If we instill the proper attitudes and actions in our employees, they will know that the real value in the mistake is the learning that comes out of it... and that will help them to become stronger leaders. What mistake have you failed to acknowledge and learn from? Sheri Mackey The Global Coach
