Afghan President Hamid Karzai made the following statement. What do you think about this? Dear countrymen, brothers and sisters, Asslam-o alikom wa rahmatollah-e wa barakatoho: Schools, madrassas, universities and institutions of higher education are places for learning skills and gaining scholarly experience. Societies that use academic and learning institutions for these purposes achieve high degrees of success and overcome their challenges by using the power of modern knowledge. Dear countrymen: In view of this principle, I have been emphasizing in the past 12 years that education centres should only be used to seek knowledge and skills so that our youth are equipped with education, enhance their knowledge and skills and serve their country, countrymen and families by making use of their skills in their respective professions. We can achieve this objective only when our education centres are free from political activities and factional rivalries. Only then will the prestige of our academic and educational centres remain intact and t! he doors of universities, madrassas and schools be open for the children of this country. Those who are interested in politics can undertake political activities outside universities and schools. School doors should never be closed for students because closing the doors of schools for students who have come to learn will amount to betraying those students and their families. We should place ourselves in the shoes of the fathers and mothers of the children who send their loved ones to acquire knowledge, but whose loved ones are deprived of this opportunity because of special political and factional objectives. Dear brothers and sisters: Students and teachers hold demonstrations for their rights in all parts of the world and to draw the attention of the government and relevant authorities to their problems. However, their protests do not prevent other students from continuing with their education and lessons and academic activities continue. Administration i! n all universities and academic institutions have a responsibility to address the problems of the students and teachers within the limits of the law. Dear teachers and students: I repeat, dear teachers and students, a student is like a son to the teacher. Teachers are like spiritual parents of the students. Parents can never accept that their children will be deprived of education and children can never disrespect their parents. Teachers and professors are especially respectable. I urge all respectable teachers and dear students to always remember that our country needs education. They should not allow even a minute of our teachers and students to be wasted. I, therefore, call on all politicians and political groups in the country not to use educational centres for their political purposes. They should allow the children of this country to learn and become able because our society needs professional skills and abilities so that it can prosper and develop.
