After Election, before Sideways, Alexander Payne made a little-known movie, about a little-known Actuary named Warren R Schmidt, called About Schmidt. I was lucky to catch it when it came out, and had the chance to revisit it fairly recently. No-frills, but a fairly typical entry in this genre, with the lead going through a late-in-life crisis and everything slowly falling apart around him. For a possibly heavy-handed drama, this one has a lot of heart and quite a bit of humor, and that makes it immensely watchable. Along with a soundtrack that has inspired many, this drama has more than enough to merit repeat viewings. Jack Nicholsons supported ably by Kathy Bates, Hope Davis, June Squibb and Dermot Mulroney.
