After Ethan and I left our visit last night of his Boy Scout Troops overnight camp out at the James Eddy estate on Barstow Rd, we spent a few minutes star gazing. He spotted a bright moving object in space moving slowly but steadily and linearly at about 85 degrees above the horizon (thats almost straight up). It was moving like North to East I think from our frame of reference. I told him it was most likely a satellite. He had never seen one before. But, just after it passed right of center sky view, it dimmed and then totally disappeared. Rather freaky we thought. We wondered, was that a UFO? Then it occurred to me that the satellite, visible of course only due to reflection of sunlight, must have just entered the umbra of the earths shadow since the sun was shining oppositional to our side of the world. Makes perfect sense to me. Now I wonder if this might provide some explanation as to many of the things people report and consider as UFOs in the night sky. Of course, if it was darting around, that would be different. But it wasnt. Just a satellite, thats all... :)
