After a week of traveling and ignoring all things TV and Facebook.... I think it may be time for me to delete them both on a more permanent timeline. It is incredibly disheartening to see sooo many of my friends who I believed to be intelligent, well read, rational, scientific-minded people losing their shit over ebola. There have been many incredibly stupid non-story news items that I have wondered how these people have made it this far in life over, but for some reason this one is leaving me baffled and disappointed far more greatly than any other. There have been 5 cases in the US, three of which came from Africa (which is a continent not a country) and only 1 has proven deadly. There has been so much blatant fear-bating and just plain disgustingly wrong information shared by these people that just merely deleting them will not solve the problem. I do not understand the desire to panic over things that will never have a direct impact over your daily life or over any of your loved ones. There are so many actual issues that need our immediate attention! Jobs, education, healthcare, housing, transportation, friendship, family and on and on and on. There are so many more common things that are likely to kill us, the flu, a car, a gun, a police officer, a cigarette, booze, our diets, hell the bed you are going to sleep in tonight is more likely to kill you by strangling you in its sheets or by you hitting the floor when you fall out, and yet we choose to lose our shit over ebola which has killed fewer people in the world in 32 years that we have known about it than guns killed in the US last year or than the flu killed in the US last year or than obesity or malnutrition will kill this month. I have taken more psychology classes than I can count and I will never understand why people choose to worry about things that are not problems instead of being human and fixing the things we actually have the capacity to fix. Humanity, I love you in person, and I fear for you when you hide behind the anonymity of the internet and show your true colors through the irony of social networking. This is my mental anguish for the night, what is yours?
