After alot of thought on tonights Ive noticed a few things, a recurring theme throughout this season and an interesting parallel at the end of this episode. Lizzie killed Mika and was going to kill Judith but she didnt understand really what she was doing or why. She didnt have a full understanding of the world she lives in and how things work when it comes to zombies, right and wrong, good and bad etc. She had no real good reason for doing it and she was a danger to the greater good of the group. So Carol had to kill her. Carol is also a killer. She killed Tyreeses friends, Karen and David and burned their bodies to cover it up. However, she had a good reason for it. She was trying to stop the virus from spreading in an attempt to save everyone else. She knew exactly what she was doing and why. She was making the hard choice to kill in order to serve the greater good. She had no delussions about the seriousness of her actions and she understood the consequences for them if she was caught. And when she was caught and Rick banished her, she understood, she took her punishment, she didnt beg and she moved on. So when Carol confessed to Ty about her killing Karen and David, she gave him her gun and told him to do what he felt he needed to do because, in that situation, all the rolls were reversed. She was now in Lizzies place, Ty was now in Carols place and he had to think over the situation like Carol had to do with what Lizzie did. He had to think about why she did what she did and if the reason why was valid because, at the end of the day Carol and Lizzie are both killers. But the important question is, Why? For what reason? Since the beginning of Season 4, whenever the group finds any new people, they are asked a series of questions: How many walkers have you killed? How many people have you killed. And why? These questions help the group to determine some things about the person and their mental state and their thought processes. It helps them to determine whether or not the person understands the difference between a walker and a living person and if they have a problem killing a walker regardless of the fact that they look like people. And if theyve killed a living person, the reason why is important. If youve killed out of revenge or sick pleasure or selfish gain then you arent worthy to stay with Ricks group. But if you had to kill in order to save your own life or the life of another, or for the greater good then that is acceptable. These questions have been a recuring theme this season and when Carol confesses to Ty she is telling him the reason why, without lying and leaving it up to him to decide if the reason is good enough to remain in the group. She couldve very easily blamed Lizzie for killing Karen and David but she didnt. Ty understood that she had a very well thought out reason for doing what she did and that her actions bothered her ever since. Its not just about having a good reason for killing the living. Its also about it not being so easy to do and it not being easy to live with but doing it anyway, as long as it serves a greater good. If you kill someone for a good reason but it was really hard to do it but you did it anyway and you have a hard time living with it, then you are still a good person. Thats why those questions are asked and thats why Carol left her fate up to Ty because even though Carol and Lizzie are killers, the reasoning and the pain afterwards makes all the difference.
