After my brother was murdered in Queens in NY back in 1972 my mother had me apply to schools outside of NYC...I got accepted to Deerfield, Choate and Andover...I did not want to go to any of them...I wanted to stay with my friends and got to Jamaica HS...when my mother asked my Junior HS 216 Principle, Mr. Steinberg which school should I pick I vividly remember him saying that if Choate was good enough for John F Kennedy it was certainly good enough for Derek....I always remember those words...I still did not want to go, I did not like it when I was there, but I am so glad that my mother made me go and I thank mom even to this day for knowing what was best for her baby boy.
