After over two weeks being besieged by Boko Haram militants, the city of Damboa in the northern Nigeria state of Borno has fallen to the rebel forces. Militants raised their flag over the city as their latest assault reportedly killed upwards of 100 civilians. Small arms and RPG fire cracked through the city yesterday after Nigerian armed forces left their posts in and around the city and fled. Civilian militia defense forces attempted to provide security for the city but were quickly overwhelmed by the well-armed militants. Numerous large villages throughout Borno State have been left deserted after civilians fled following a letter campaign by Boko Haram militants stating their intent to attack. Civilian militia groups have attempted to take up security details in high risk areas as the Nigerian military struggles to fight back against the growing insurgency taking place by Boko Haram.
