After remembering the Challenger disaster a week or so ago, Id be remiss not to remind everyone that today is the anniversary of the Columbia disaster (2003). As you remember, the spaceship broke up on re-entry over Texas and debris was found as far away as Arkansas and Louisiana. I was on the back porch on Amelia Island that Saturday of the event. I always think hauntingly of this tragedy for NASA management felt there was nothing that could be done if major damage had been caused by the foam insulation that struck the left wing during takeoff.
