After seeing that the majority of Norcals Smash 4 community was against custom moves, I decided to write up something to hopefully sway a few opinions. I know its a little long, but please take a second to give it a read. Im strongly in favor of custom moves in competitive play as they add some much needed depth and diversity to the game. I think its silly that so many others seem to be against it. The Smash community shouldnt be banning something simply because its different from what were used to. We banned items from competitive play because they were random and they interfered with the player vs. player experience. We banned stages when their hazards or walk-offs cause similar issues. So far, custom moves dont suffer from any of the offenses that we as a community have deemed ban-worthy. The only viable argument Ive seen against them would be how difficult they are to unlock. Several people I know have gone through and managed to do it already. Its time consuming, but far from impossible. For those that dont have the time to invest, you also have the option of purchasing a Power Save which unlocks all of them. If neither of those options appeal to you, then for now you could take the easy route and unlock only moves for your characters. If youre concerned about experience against custom moves it would be best to get used to them sooner rather than later. We will never learn how to deal with them until we give ourselves experience against them. If anything, more time will only hinder our ability to adapt. There is a good chance were going to become so used to the old move sets that we wont be able to adjust. The fighting game community is very resistant to change. My fear is that if we start banning them now, we wont move forward in the future. There are many high-level tournaments already using them. We dont need more things splitting our already fragile community. As far as Im concerned, until they actually cause a problem, we shouldnt even be considering the removal of one of Smash 4s most unique features. Tl;dr: Custom moves are not ban-worthy as they seem fairly balanced. If we wait to implement them people will become set in their ways and it will be hard to incorporate. Learning how to play against them will be easier if we do it sooner than later. We dont need more things splitting the community.
