After spending almost thirteen days in the chrysalis, Monarcha - TopicsExpress

After spending almost thirteen days in the chrysalis, Monarcha emerged at 9:30 am today. Here are some stills taken between 10 and 11:15 am. Videos of her actual emergence and one showing me trying to help her to adjust to the outside world will follow. She was not ready to support her wings when I took her outside. I tried a few places to gently place her before settling on a very protected area where Monarchs were already flitting from milkweed to milkweed. The final photo shows her hiding spot where she remained for what I suspect was a few hours. Ive read that females spend 9 to 10 days in the pupa stage, while males may take up to 14 days to emerge. So, Monarcha and Tillie are both likely male! (What are they doing in there that takes so long, guys?)
