After the clutch in my car died, I decided to test the market, - TopicsExpress

After the clutch in my car died, I decided to test the market, thinking that with 110,000 miles it might be time to get rid of it and take advantage of the residual value before more expensive long-term maintenance/repairs manifest themselves. This has been an eye-opening education. (Im leaving out names of specific dealers so this stays a general discussion.) Even with the bad clutch, a local dealer with mid-range American car lines and one budget import line offers me $4,000 below KBB/Edmunds book value on trade-in. OK, seems fair. After I fix clutch and put on four new tires, private buyer offers $500 above book value. Excellent. On the other hand, local dealer that handles luxury imports comes through with $7,000 below book value. And thats WITH the new clutch and tires. Not going back there for anything.
