After this weeks refusal by the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the Marriage Amendment cases, there will no doubt be a long line of political candidates hoping to portray themselves for historys sake as having been supporters of Marriage Equality in South Carolina all along. Let us remember that there have been damn few elected officials in South Carolina who have actually been with us all along. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, David Mack, James Smith, Floyd Breeland, Todd Rutherford, Bob Coble and Joe Riley are the ones who come to mind. There were a very few others whose names we should by all means record before this issue passes into history. The fact that some prominent candidates for elected office in South Carolina are already saying today that South Carolinians should accept the Supreme Courts decision on Marriage Equality, begs the question...why wasnt the United States Constitution good enough for you? Why were you so willing to demonstrate by deed and word for years that the U.S. Constitution was not equally applicable to ALL Americans. Whats changed? Perhaps desperation to get votes in next months election? Do these people think that in our excitement in the coming weeks that we will forget that they denied us equality for years while they took our money, time and talent? We will not forget. Giving up their fight against Marriage Equality and purporting to now be our friends solely because there is no longer any way to win, is not leadership. It is just more of the same spineless behavior we have come to expect from the weak-willed charlatans who masquerade as South Carolina leaders. These people are not entitled to celebrate with us. They impeded our equality until it became unpopular to do so and they do not deserve our support in any way, shape or form...not now and certainly not in November. Congratulations to ALL who have endured the burden of inequality that was lifted today and our thanks to those who supported us and fought for us...especially Judge Irvin G. Condon whose name will live on in South Carolina LGBTQ history. We will be forever grateful. Charlie Smith Charleston
