After tonights gubernatorial debate, I asked one of Charlie Crists - TopicsExpress

After tonights gubernatorial debate, I asked one of Charlie Crists supporters from academia about Charlie Crist raising tuition for students. He told me that tuition should be raised, that Florida public university students need to suck it up, and that we should pay more in tuition if we want to attend such a good school. Those were his exact words to UF students: suck it up. He found it outrageous and expressed disgust at the fact that many students graduate from UF debt-free. A debt-free, affordable, high-quality education: what an atrocity (btw- this is the reason I chose to stay in Florida and attend UF over schools ranked MUCH higher). He then went on to disparage Republicans for raising the bright futures academic standards because it meant that less minorities and low-income students would qualify, so they could not attend Florida universities, if they had to meet higher academic standards (also implying that they were less academically capable). Does raising tuition not hurt low-income students and make them less able to afford to attend school in Florida? Raising academic standards also encourages students of ALL races to perform better and excel: trust me, I saw my friends in high school work diligently to attain the standards needed for bright futures- it was their key motivation to perform to the best of their ability. I wonder how he would have responded if I suggested that he should be paid less so that the money from his generous tenure salary could off-set the cost of more low-income students receiving scholarships to attend UF. Students: a vote for Charlie Crist is a vote for lower-quality teachers and higher tuition. The Democrats and Charlie Crist believe in placing a higher burden on Florida students and families and putting the interests of teachers unions and academia above the interests of Floridas hard-working students, families, and taxpayers. If you want to pay more in tuition, have more student debt at graduation, and have a lower-quality education, vote for Charlie Crist. If you want to continue attending one of the nations best schools at one of the lowest tuition rates, see UF rise in the rankings, have less student debt, and have better quality teachers throughout Florida, vote for Rick Scott. ~rant over
