After venerating him as ‘demigod’, OBAMA blasts the LUO culture as barbaric and uncouth Wednesday July 30, 2014 - US President Barrack Obama on Monday blasted those Luo men who still practice the culture of wife inheritance and marrying many wives as barbaric and uncouth traditions which have no place in the 21st Century. Obama, whose father was a Luo from Kenya, cited the culture of the Luo community while criticizing the contemporary practice of polygamy. Addressing 500 youths from Africa, among them 47 Kenyans, participating in the Washington Fellowship dubbed Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in the US, Obama said such cultures and traditions among Luos in Kenya and other African communities do not work in the modern world and as such they should be discarded if a community has to move forward. “In Kenya, for example, in the Luo tribe where my father also happened to come from, polygamy existed. It was based on the idea that women had their own compounds, they had their own land, and so they were empowered in that area to be self-sufficient. But that power was lost when men begun moving to towns and cities to work,” said Obama. “So what worked then might not work today - In fact, does not work today. If you try to duplicate traditions that were based on an entirely different economy and on an entirely society and entirely different expectations, well, that’s going to break down. It’s not going to work,” he added. This comes despite Luos having revered Obama as if he were a ‘demigod’ and many of them including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, refer to him as their cousin.
