After years in uniform, Amber Fern said she became a tomboy and it took her a while to get her style back. So this month, the Great Falls-based photographer has organized a Beautiful Vets contest in which the winners receive a personal photo shoot, complete with hair, makeup, clothes and jewelry. Fern, who has a photography studio downtown, donates her time to capture military homecomings and a few years ago came up with an idea to show her appreciation for female veterans. Women who had served in the military but are no longer on active duty are eligible for the event and nominations were taken through Wednesday at Scheels, but Fern said she’d take nominations on the event’s Facebook page through Saturday, when the 10 women are chosen. More than 30 women have been nominated.
