Aggressively disturbing and relentlessly bleak, David Michods - TopicsExpress

Aggressively disturbing and relentlessly bleak, David Michods sophomore feature was one of the most vivid portraits of a post-apocalyptic world Ive ever seen committed to screen. The cinematography, score and spot-on set decoration perfectly combine to completely get under your skin. While it suffers from lack of story and character development, it is anchored by two powerful and jarring performances from Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, that would only be better if their characters were given clear objectives. While the first thirty minutes reach cinematic nirvana, it does drag quite a bit in the middle and several scenes play out longer than they should. All faults aside, The Rover is a riveting cinematic experience that is sure to divide most everyone. David and Lauren hated it, but Ben and I loved it. I think Gina fell somewhere in between.
