Aging is bitter sweet. At least, once youre beyond the age of wishing you were older - old enough to get a job, old enough to drive, old enough to vote, old enough to drink, old enough to... But now, well into my 57th solar orbit, its bitter as often as sweet. Like this morning, for example. Out on my morning walk - you know, the one you take to offset the expanding belt line - I passed the bus stop in front of the coffee house where a mix of people wait at sidewalk tables. One table held the drinks of two regular customers - frumpy old geezers with unmatched socks and tousled hair and tweed jackets with elbow patches. As I passed by today they said hello - as if I were an old friend. A peer. One whos mornings are spent at a sidewalk table, discussing the worlds news until our to-go cups are empty. The beautiful professional people at the other tables? No nod. No hello. No eye contact. Unless Id come between them and their iPone, theyd never have known I was there. I am now invisible to them. Seems Ive been thrust into a new peer group not of my own choosing. Oh well. Better go see what this is all about. Ill let you know.
