Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei has said he is living on borrowed time because some mafias want him dead sooner than later. Speaking during a media interview, Koskei noted that he had received death threats from cartels in the tea industry for trying to streamline the operations in the sector. He said the cartel warned him to leave the tea sector alone and stop fixing the problems in the ailing industry or else he will lose his head. “I was told I would carry my head in my hand because of my efforts to restore order in the tea sector”, said Koskei. The Agriculture CS revealed that his trouble began when he threatened to overhaul the Kenya Tea Development Authority KTDA), which is controlled by cartels, because it was the root cause of all the problems in the tea sector since cartels manipulate operations at the auction at their discretion and even manipulate prices of tea to their advantage. However, Koskei vowed never to be intimidated saying he would rather die than to have cartels take over Kenya’s biggest foreign exchange earner. “I will stop at nothing to ensure sanity is brought back to this sector. I will not be cowed by these threats,” said Koskei. Surprisingly, some tea farmers do not share Koskei’s opinion and have dismissed his claims as pure politics. “Do not be fooled. It is all politics. It has become fashion for leaders to attack KTDA,” said one of the tea farmers from Kericho.
