Ah, 14. A fine year. Reflections from my favorite $3.50 steak restaurant on Doi Can Street in Hanoi, Vietnam: Made my national television debut as a finalist on Thailands Got Talent, and got to play to packed houses in Vietnam after we got axed. Heard bombs go off in Bangkok during heavy protests, and got mixed up in a military coup in Chiang Mai. Hopped a riverboat in Laos down the Mekong to Luang Prabang with some of the finest folks Ive ever come across. Trekked through amazing jungle and waterfalls, and took the hard road to Vang Vieng for some world-renowned boozing and river tubing. Jumped into tiger cages and nearly skidded into a King Cobra during an afternoon snake show. Got to catch up with my sister in Bangok, who traveled across the globe with a pair of Rainbow flops after mine got nicked. Had some bad moat water flung in my face during Thailands four-day, countrywide Songkran water festival and got so ill I couldnt move for two days, with a fever that gave me terrible chills in 103 degree heat. Ive hung out with celebrities and businessmen in ritzy, five-star hotel bars, and Ive shot pool with hookers and ladyboys in seedy back Sois. A bad motorbike crash. More planes, buses, boats and sleeper trains than I care to remember. Teaching English. Riverside songwriting. Bribing dirty traffic cops. Sprawling mountaintop Buddhist temples. Wine. Women. Song. And a whole host of other things I cant even begin to remember, or mention for fear of deportation, incarceration or incrimination of the Guilty. Been a helluva year, and so far 15s lookin pretty good. Happy New Year from one edge of the world to another!
