Ah, the noble lie. It was Plato, the father of philosophy, who hatched the concept of the noble lie over 2,000 years ago. To Plato, the crooked timber of humanity simply lacks the wisdom and virtue for self-rule. Society must therefore be governed by an elite minority of superior philosopher-kings, under whose tutelary shadow the great mass of men must fall. And sometimes these philosopher-kings must tell the masses noble lies to compel them to act in pursuit of the greater good. In the absence of a unifying belief and commitment to common purpose, society would be torn apart by the ceaseless collision of petty self-interest. If it requires a lie, so be it. The noble lie thus mobilizes falsehood and sets it loose in the service of a higher good. Convince a man of its truth and youve hooked a fish. Convince a society and youve netted a school of fish. And it gives us no joy to report that the noble lie is alive and well in modern America. To wit, Obamacare architect and would-be philosopher-king Jonathan Gruber admitted to a whopper of a noble lie this week. In an unguarded moment, he conceded that he took some rather extravagant economies with the truth to help foist Obamacare onto the American people. For our own good, of course. But isnt that always the case with our betters, though... And what exactly did he say about you, the American voter? https://youtube/watch?v=G790p0LcgbI
