Ahern House 171 Tramway Parade, Beaumaris Designed by Anatol - TopicsExpress

Ahern House 171 Tramway Parade, Beaumaris Designed by Anatol Kagan & Associates, 1960 Russian-born and Berlin-trained architect Anatol Kagan (1913-2009), migrated to Australia in 1939 and established his own private practice in Melbourne in 1950. Before he moved to Sydney a decade later, he rose to become one of the pre-eminent architects to Melbournes flourishing post-war Jewish community, best-known for his luxurious houses for wealthy Jewish businessmen. While Kagans residential work was largely centred on the eastern and south-eastern suburbs such as Kew, Hawthorn, Balwyn and Caulfield, he is known to have designed at least three houses in Beaumaris. These comprised the Ames House on Beach Road, the Berdy House in Banksia Street, and the Ahern House in Tramway Parade. Of these three projects, only the last is still standing. Lovingly restored by its architect owner in 2009, the house remains in immaculate condition. An unsung champion amongst Melbournes pantheon of post-war modernists architects, Anatol Kagan is the subject of a newly-published full-length illustrated biography by Simon Reeves. The book, entitled Gentle Modernist: The Nine Lives of Anatol Kagan, is now available for purchase online. vividpublishing.au/anatolkagan/
