Akai Gurley, of Brooklyn, was shot and killed by a police officer. He was doing nothing wrong. He was just walking in the stairwell. Though I never met Akai or his girlfriend, Kimberly, Ive spent time in this public housing development in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. Youve met some of the people and pets who live in this building through Dogs of New York. Youve supported people and pets living in this building through my non-profit organization, Beyond Breed. These members of our Ruff Riders family call the Louis H Pink Houses their home. I never met Akai, but his life mattered. Now he is dead, his loved ones are grieving, and the community continues to live in fear.
