Alameda Merchants vs. Nevada Big Horns Season Series: Merchants 4-0 The Merchants handled their business against the Bighorns, winning the first two games of the season in Alameda 10-2 and 6-1. When Alameda and Nevada met again in Reno over the 4th of July weekend, balls were flying all over McQueen High School, as the Merchants won by scores of 21-7 and 18-2. PITCHING: The Merchants threw their two bullets out first - the aces of the staff - Andrew Herrera (Sterling College) and Nick Hudson (Cal State East Bay) in the first two games of the season in Alameda. Both pitchers went 6 innings to get their first victories of the season. Herrera gave up 2 earned and Hudson gave up 1. They combined to walk 1 and strike out 14. In Game 1 in Reno, Herrera had a shakier outing, but still came up with the W. Cameron Rowland (Univ of Nevada, Reno), Gunnar David (Ohlone JC) and Michael Echavia (University of Hawaii) pitched 4 innings of relief and combined to give up only 1 run. In Game 2, Ricky Delgado had his strongest outing of the summer up to this point. He was clocked sitting at 90 mph from the 1st to the 4th. He gave up 1 earned and struck out 7. Nick Piscotty (Duke), Dean Aliamus (Skyline JC) and Daniel Reitzler (University of San Diego) performed well in relief - giving up 0 earned runs in 3 innings combined. HITTING: In Game 1 in Alameda, the Merchants pulled away early - scoring 3 in the 2nd and 5 in the 3rd to put the game out reach. OF Joe Armstrong (Lewis and Clark State) went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. SS Marcus Williams (Cal State East Bay) was 2 for 2 with a 3B and a run scored to pace the Merchants at the plate. In Game 2, OF Jordan Grubbs (College of Idaho) and JR Davis (Contra Costa CC) combined for 3 hits (Grubbs had two doubles and Davis had one), 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Reno was a straight up slugfest. The Merchants score 39 runs in two games. Here were some of the notable performances at the plate: Brian Hamm (CSU Monterey Bay) - 6 for 9 with 4 runs & 3 RBI JR Davis (Contra Costa CC) - 5 for 7 with 5 runs & 2 RBI Michael Echavia (Hawaii) - 6 for 7 with 6 runs & 5 RBI Conner Jauch (San Diego) - 5 for 8 with 3 runs & 3 RBI Jordan Grubbs (Idaho) - 4 for 8 with 3 runs & 5 RBI
