Alan Shearer says he will always be grateful to Sir Bobby Robson after one of the game’s most iconic managers rescued his career with Newcastle United. Speaking on the eve of the Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day, which encourages the whole country to get involved in grassroots football, Shearer looked back on arrival’s at St James’ Park back in 1999. Then after being dropped by Ruud Gullit for the Tyne-Wear derby after a build-up in player fall outs at the club, Shearer admits he could have left United. Gullit had also left Rob Lee on the sidelines and not handed him a squad number while Duncan Ferguson and Stuart Pearce were also axed Shearer said today: “For a figurehead and for the North-East he was huge.“But for Newcastle United he was massive because when he came in we were near the bottom of the Premier League. “Confidence was at an all time low, including for myself.“If he hadn’t have come in I would probably have had to leave the football club. “And there was just this aura about him. “The first game that he was there he took some of the senior players into his room and just speaking to us for half an hour he gave us confidence without actually seeing us play. “There was just something about him that when he spoke to you he knew what made you tick.”
