Alan, Taj, Derek, Yoko, Hillary, Dereks father, and I scouted out - TopicsExpress

Alan, Taj, Derek, Yoko, Hillary, Dereks father, and I scouted out spots south of Indian River Inlet today in preparation for next weekends Coastal Delaware Birding Blitz - highlights were two Orange-crowned Warblers (one at Holts Landing SP pictured below, and one at the Delaware Seashore SP Fresh Pond); Nashville Warbler, Fox Sparrow, Eurasian Wigeon, Blue-headed Vireo and generally awesome birding at Assawoman WA; Tricolored Heron, Lincolns Sparrow and a late Common Tern at Indian River Inlet, where the Merlin shown below was cooperative for photos after it ate a Swamp Sparrow; and the best bird of the day was a yellow-bellied type flycatcher that Derek saw fly across DE1 just south of the inlet (we searched for it for a long time, without any luck). Pine Siskins and Purple Finches flew over at multiple locations. Loads of sparrows around - mostly Song, Swamp, Field, Chipping, White-throated, etc. Numerous Ruby-crowned Kinglets fluttering around made our heart race in anticipation for something rarer. At least 100 species for the day!
