Alarics surgery is scheduled for Friday at 11 am. They will stop - TopicsExpress

Alarics surgery is scheduled for Friday at 11 am. They will stop his feeds a few hours before surgery and restart the IV nutrition because he will be NPO for a few days while his bowels readjust after the surgery. He will be put back on the ventilator for the procedure but the doctor says that they will start weaning him off of it immediately after surgery and that he should be back off it within a day or so. They are going to restart his feeds once he begins moving his bowels the old fashioned way, but they are going to go very slowly- starting off with very small amounts and increasing the feeds very slowly over a period of a couple of weeks until he is at full feeds again. They want to make sure that the reconnection goes well and that he doesnt have any re-perforations or other complications. If everything goes well with his recovery and he starts holding his temperature outside of the isolette then we should be able to bring him home in about three weeks to a month. He will be coming home on his supplements so while we will be able to breastfeed a couple of times a day he will have to be mostly bottle fed because his supplements have to be mixed with breast milk. How long he will be on these supplements mostly depends on him, and how strong he gets over time. We have an excellent pediatrician at home and we know that Alaric is going to continue receiving the best care possible even after we leave here.
