Alash Ensemble was at the Spurlock museum today. Tuvan music is said to mimic natural harmonies and sounds, like that of wind swirling among rocks or the sound of waterfalls where deer gather. It was a shivering experience to chase these notes and in the process being de-territorialized. But as soon as the show was over, Baudrillard and Eco came to mind. These Tuvan notes that tore through me was unlike anything that Ive ever heard from winds and waters. In retrospect, these notes were neither copies of nature, nor perversions of nature, nor had intentions to be nature. In giving another *nature* to nature, these notes superseded reality and were simulacra par excellence. And as such, perhaps I will hardly ever hear wind or water again without already always these notes preceding them, my hearing refracting through these harmonies.
