Alberta Animal Services recognizes that several members of the public are looking for answers on our euthanasia practices. We’ve seen the conversations, accusations and assumptions about our policies and processes and want to provide some clarity. The recent posts circulating on Facebook are actually old information. You will be relieved and happy to know that we no longer use a gas chamber at our shelter. This change was made several months ago, as part of our commitment to being a progressive organization that continually makes improvements to provide the best possible care to the animals in our shelter. In the interests of being open and transparent to the public about this issue, our euthanasia policy is posted on our website: (link here) As you will see, we now work with partnering veterinary clinics where euthanasia is performed by a licensed veterinarian using the most humane method according to the position of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (canadianveterinarians.net/documents/euthanasia). We have the utmost respect for the animals throughout the process, and do whatever we possibly can to minimize any stress they may experience. It is very difficult to make the decisions we are faced with and we do not take these decision lightly. We recognize that the subject of euthanasia is emotionally-charged and, at times, very hard for people to consider or think about. We do feel that the subject requires both reflection and open discussion to help to reduce the practice, not only in our facility, but in our community. Alberta Animal Services is very proud of our increasing success with finding new homes for the animals in our care. We are dedicated to decreasing the homeless, abandoned and stray animals in our community. We believe that responsible ownership of companion animals, especially through training, spaying/neutering and proper identification reduces the necessity of euthanasia. The community can help to decrease the need for euthanasia by being responsible pet owners and encouraging others to do the same.
