Albie Sachs: The former anti-apartheid activist and South African - TopicsExpress

Albie Sachs: The former anti-apartheid activist and South African Constitutional Court Judge Albie Sachs (1935 -), who visited Norway last week, is the subject of a new documentary entitled Soft Vengeance by one Abby Ginzburg, which is featured at the African Film Festival in London UK this week. I can think of few academics more worthy of a documentary than Sachs, a son of Lithuanian Jews who grew up in my beloved Cape Town, who was among the relatively few white South Africans who opposed apartheid more or less from day one in 1948. As a twenty-year old, he was a signatory to the Freedom Charter at the Kliptown Congress. Having almost lost his life to a car bomb planted by the apartheid regimess assassins in his car in exile in Maputo in 1988, he went on to become - along with the late Kader Asmal - the legal and intellectual father of the South African Constitution of 1996. Sachs is also a writer of distinction - having been awarded the prestigious Alon Paton Award twice for his The Soft Vengeance of a Freedom Fighter (1991) and The Strange Alchemy of Life and Law (2009) - the latter hereby recommended as one of the most remarkable and interesting works in legal theory I have read. Can anyone of my FB friends get this documentary to Norway soon - please? vimeo/33161505
