Albizia procera, White Siris, Seto Siris This tree occurs in the sub-Himalayan region and across to Assam and Burma, usually preferring swampy places and steambanks. In Nepal it is found from 650 to 1350 meters approximately. It is a large graceful tree with a clean, high-branching trunk and a light crown. The bark is smoothish, light yellow or greenish-grey, and is often marked with horizontal lines. The bark of old trees tends to peel off in flakes. The compound (bipinnate) leaves are divided into between 3 to 5 pairs of quite large (15 to 26 cm long) painnae, each of which is again divided into between 12 and 24 pairs of leaflets. The leaflets are about 3 cm long, short stalked, and obliquely oblong. The midrib of the leaflet is diagonal and nearer to the lower edge. The flowers, which appear at the end of the cold season, are yellowish-white. The pods are dark red-brown, thin, strap-shaped and about 14 cm long. They are marked with darker patches over each seed, of which there are between 6 and 12. The timber is used mainly for wheels, house-posts, rice-pounders and agricultural implements. The wood makes very good charcoal. The bark is used for tanning, and from it a gum can be extracted. In some places the bark is pounded up, mixed with flour and eaten in times of famine.
