Albuquerque has been highlighted in National news due to the number of police shootings and the subsequent riots over the weekend. There are ongoing investigations being conducted by the Department of Justice, the FBI, and NMs own Attorney General. Compounding all of this is the recent 3 hour+ standoff between a mentally challenged homeless man living in the foothills and several police officers and a K-9 Unit which resulted in the man being fatally shot. At a news conference the new Chief of Police prematurely called the shooting justified which caused Mayor Richard Berry do damage control. Polls have shown only 36% approve of the handling of those problems. Is there a problem? Apparently so. Are their solutions? Most definitely. So we need to allow those who can bring those solutions to bear the chance to do exactly that. It certainly does us no good to have groups like Anonymous to get involve and spew their ideologies and behaviors of anarchy into the mix. There are always those who protest peacefully but then there are those who take and use any opportunity to act lawless and just tear things up for the sake of doing it. Albuquerque has its share of criminal elements many who I should never have to encounter ever walking down a public sidewalk. The entire blame should not be laid at the feet of those who put a uniform on everyday leaving wives, children, and loved ones and put their lives at risk. Our medical experts, justice system employees, judges, lawyers all share a piece of this. Perhaps new training and a change in the mindset and the purging of the bad cops would be a great place to start. Stay vigilant, stay informed, but give the system a chance to correct things.
