Alderman Ameya Pawar of the 47th Ward shared information about an incident that residents in the 33rd heard from across the river earlier this week (early morning on 8/6, we believe). Big thanks to the alderman and his office for sharing the information. Hi everyone - I just spoke to the 19th District Commander (who also spoke with Ald. OConnor -- where the incident took place- although these are just political boundaries) and the reports of a drive-by shooting are not true. The gunshot was self inflicted and accidental. The boy (a known gang member) has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. The gun has been recovered as well. The 19th District is on alert and is closely monitoring and patrolling the Lawrence/Kedzie area (in addition to the area where the shooting took place). The Commander also stated that there are no known gang members in the area where the shooting took place and are concentrating efforts on the Lawrence/Kedzie area where the Latin King activity is concentrated. My office takes public safety issues very seriously and we share your concern. Weve reported all graffiti to the Department of Streets and Sanitation and they are working hard to take it down as quickly as possible. We are keeping an eye on the situation to our west and will keep you posted on developments. Finally, please do not hesitate to call 911 when you see suspicious activity. Also, please contact our office directly on all public safety matters - [email protected]. It helps us in identifying trends and to properly documenting issues. Jim is on maternity leave until the 18th so you can email [email protected] and my team will get you answers in the interim. Again, we take these incidents very seriously and we share your concern.
