Alice Deres, one of Angelicas busy working artisans who displays and sells her work at the Whistle Stop Shoppe, writes: HOW I STARTED MY BUSINESS LIFE IN ANGELICA As a working artist / teacher, never lacking for inspiration and ideas, I create on a daily basis. I also have a fondness for old things with a story or history behind them and tend to incorporate ideas from them for my art. My home and studio space (which was my basement) was becoming quite full, so I needed to figure something out where I could work full-time and still have the enjoyment of meeting people and selling some of my work. In the 1990’s I came across an ad for people to rent spaces at the “Old Garage” then owned by Skip and Deb Hecker. We would work once or twice a month and take care of our space. What a great place –we had a blast! That’s when I fell in love with Angelica. The townspeople, events, historic buildings and visitors have provided countless hours of joy and inspiration. I have had a business here ever since. The Old Garage eventually went up for sale so many of us needed a new place and a group of us went to the Village Mercantile, which has now changed ownership and is called “The Whistle Stop Shoppe.” We are a multi-dealer co-op open currently Friday to Sunday 10-5.
