All around the world there is growing awareness that we face a frighteningly big challenge over the next three decades: how to feed a population that is relentlessly growing, increasingly urban and due to pass the 9 billion mark by 2050. Scarcity and over-farming of land, chemical run-off and crop susceptibility to pests and diseases all mean that traditional, openfield agriculture will struggle to meet the demand sustainably.Consequently we are confronted by a clear challenge to find innovativenew ways to produce the food we need.
