All bunnies arrived at the Hollow today about 2:30. Most were spayed yesterday so all were feeling uncomfortable. It was hot and sticky and I couldnt wait to get them out of their carriers. The transport car did not have air conditioning and I was concerned as they were packed in like sardines in a can. Twelve carriers in one tiny car. All the crates were set up and ready and I was grabbing bunnies, checking their stitches to be sure they were all fine and quickly moving onto the next carrier. I opened the 4th carrier and Oh my god - it had so much blood in it. After years of experience you might think I would be cool and collected. Well youre wrong! I screamed then thought rapidly that thismuch blood had to mean the stitches ripped out and since I have had lots of buns with outer stitches torn out and it never had blood like that I rapidly decided that this girl had ripped out both outer and inner stitches and her guts were hanging out! But did I look? No! I threw her into a clean carrier to keep the wound from getting more bacteria, called South Wilton to tell them I was on my way with an emergency, Rapidly threw the rest of the bunnies into their crates and flew out the door, carrier in hand. I was racing against time to get her help and I drove way over the speed limit. When I was almost there i had a sudden thought - wow I hope she didnt rip out a toenail. Then the thought was gone. And anyway - it was way too much blood in that carrier for one toenail.. Got to South Wilton and I raced into the waiting room and the triage tech came and hurried her to the back room to be examined. I sat calmly waiting for the verdict. Honestly I was mostly worrying about what this was going to cost..... Out came the triage tech to get me and as I walked down the hallway I knew something was really not right as the doctor and the techs were grinning. Suddenly I knew. It had to be a toenail and yup - I was right. This little girl ripped out two toenails during the ride up from New York city! If I had just looked but honestly I never took the time to flip her over! I will NEVER live this down at South Wilton! Crystal Zamfino , Clare Fahy , Judy Hoyt
