All of us at Metrovino would like to extend our most emphatic sympathies to all those affected by the floods. We are all in this together and are here to help those in need. With this in mind, following are some instructions on how to deal with wine bottles that have been submerged in river water: Here is a quick primer on how to treat wine (and liquor ) bottles that have been exposed to floodwaters. NB: please wear rubber, latex or plastic gloves! 1. Screwcap and Crown (beer-bottle type) closure containers: This type of closure can harbour bacteria, mold etc. under the capsule sleeve. These are of a potential hazard and should be disposed of- sorry! 2. Cork finished wine bottles: These bottles must be stripped of their capsule. The capsule is the aluminum/plastic/wax or other material that covers the cork. Bottles should then be completely and briefly immersed in a strong bleach/water solution (tepid) and wiped COMPLETELY dry with a clean cloth (paying special attention to the exposed surface of the cork). This treatment is especially important for sparkling wines, due to the wine cage and metal cap used. 3. For bottles where the label is still attached, take a rubber band and put it in place to hold the label on in case the label detaches when it dries out. 4. For bottles which have the label detached by the floodwaters and the label is not recoverable, try to identify the wine by the capsule. Some wineries will also brand the corks with the wine’s name. 5. If the bottle can be identified but the label is not recoverable, masking tape and a marker will allow you to mark the bottle. The bad news here is for wine collectors that hoped to sell/order their wine. If the label has been damaged and the capsule removed, the market value of the bottle is slightly compromised. The GOOD news is that (if treated to the above procedure) you still have a bottle to enjoy! Invest in wine for your future pleasure!!! the Metrovino crew (While this method does not offer guaranteed success, it is one that we have personally found successful. We can’t take any responsibility should you be dissatisfied with the results.) metrovino/
