All of us experience feelings of anger and frustration from time to time. They are a normal part of life. However, these feelings need to be expressed at some point. According to Dr. Jim Manganiello, clinical psychologist and medical psychotherapist, “Medical psychology research has shown that people who cannot or will not allow themselves to experience and express their emotional pain tend to be at increased risk for serious illnesses, such as heart disease and cancer.” He also reports that “Our immune system becomes weakened when we try to cover up our distress and pain. Studies at Southern Methodist University in Texas have shown that individuals who were encouraged and supported to express their emotions associated with traumatic experiences demonstrated an improvement in the function of their immune system.” So whether you get professional help or have a trusted confidant – get it off your chest because bottled up emotions are toxifying!
