All these people jumping up and down about the new facebook messenger app dont seem to realise that probably half the other apps on their phone have the same permissions... People should read this link below and arm themselves with knowledge before complaining any further. And if they are still worried, they should downgrade their phone to a non-smartphone, because if they went through all the apps on their phone, they would notice how many more have even MORE access to your phone. Even the Gmail app has access to modify your contacts, delete stuff off your phone (including SD card on Android devices), full network access, including mobile data, turn on or off your NFC features at will, etc.. And if you think thats scary, check out the permissions for all your other messaging apps. Skype has permissions to see where you are, modify your contacts, read your SMSs, make direct phone calls, record audio and take pictures and videos, read your phones identity, modify your system settings, and so on. Relax people, Facebook is just trying to make an app that can be your primary communication app for messages, SMS, phone calls, etc.. Its not the NSA or Australian Govt.. snopes/computer/facebook/messenger.asp
