All too often we as pit bull owners focus too much on physical stimulation and we tend to neglect mental stimulation. We are going to post a few fun ideas for you guys to do with your pit bull, these will also teach your dogs valuable skills which will make life with them easier. Impulse control is something very important that should be taught to reactive dogs or breeds. IMPULSE CONTROL: Impulse Control ~ Or the lack thereof Posted on January 9, 2009 | By Jody Diehl Dogs don’t come with a lot of impulse control. Their natural inclinations say ‘do it now!’. Consider your dog’s ancestors in the wild. Your dog wouldn’t be here today if her forbearers fought the urge to, say, chase dinner or run away from a threat. Impulse control is not conducive to survival in the wild. That is the same genetic makeup that is curled up on your couch right now. Since impulse control is not innate it must be taught. So, keep in mind that a huge part of training is to teach your dog to leave something when asked and to not jump on people, dash out the door, chase children, cats and joggers and so on. This human environment is not necessarily safe for a critter who acts without thinking. Two of the biggest at-risk behaviors that come to mind are door dashing and eating things that may not be safe. Three skills that go a long way toward impulse control are stay, wait and leave it. Lots of physical exercise can help a dog hold back and can make training easier. Playing games that require a start and stop (such as tug of war) are good ways to get your dog thinking twice before acting. Asking your dog to sit before giving her anything she wants helps a lot, too. This shows her that good behavior makes good things happen. And she gets to practice the good stuff in different scenarios. Dogs who have not been taught impulse control can be difficult to live with and may not be safe. Dogs can get in trouble for this natural inclination when we don’t understand that they are just being dogs. As usual, it is the trainer’s job to teach the dog…not the dog’s job to figure it out. https://youtube/watch?v=ipT5k1gaXhc
