Allow us to take a few minutes to dispel any myths that have been put forth against the reputation of the mighty, the fierce, the noble Bob White. Deadly when cornered, the Bobwhite prefers to lie still until his foe has passed. However, when confronted, destruction is complete. The Southwestern United States was once a lush paradise, heavily forested with flowing rivers, verdant fields, and a wide variety of wildlife. As near as earth scientists can figure, several thousand years ago, a single Eagle could not leave well enough alone and picked a fight with a single Bobwhite. The desolate waste you now see through much of the Southwest is a result of the Bobwhite’s wrath. Consider for a moment: did Native Americans think twice about killing a Bear with nothing more than a sharpened rock? Ever see a Bobwhite skin rug? No English dandies, in tight riding pants go hunting Bobwhites from horses. No Bobwhite tails ever hung from car antennas. No one ever wore quail skin hats or trapped Bobwhite for their pelts. Bobwhites don’t sit in a tree all night asking questions, his head spinning around on his shoulders. No! A Bobwhite keeps you up all night if he’s feeling surly, but otherwise, mankind has learned to leave well enough along and count its blessings that the Bobwhite is content to sit where he is on the food Bear Song chain.
