Almost slept through most of Fathers day. Another long night of volunteering. Just walked in the door at 1:30am Sunday morning from Neighborhood watch duties. About 10 mins. later the phone rang with the Red Cross on the other end. There was a house fire in the northern part of the County and we had been requested to provide Canteen services for the Firefighters on the scene and assistance to the victims. Arrived on scene at 3:15 to find the Firefighters still on the scene cooling hot spots in a home that was totally destroyed by fire. Provided food and fluids for everyone at the scene, located the residents, and started our paperwork. I know some of my friends and classmates have been the victim of a Disaster and lost everything they own, but it is a very humbling sight to see two people standing near their home with nothing but the clothing on their back. They were uninjuried having arrived home to find the home on fire. Besides supporting the Firefighter with cold fluids and hot food we also provided the residents with Red Cross assistance so they could buy clothing and food, and paid for a Motel for three nights until they could contact their insurance company and start be building. The night was filled with volunteers from the Township Volunteer Fire Dept. to the Red Cross all willing to help someone that needed help. I arrived home at 6:30am, but sleep takes awhile. I needed to unwind and reflect.
